What made the Macedonian army so effective during the time of Alexander?

by thunderking500

I understand the Persian empire was not at its peak, when Alexander invaded, but it was still extremely powerful and wealthy

What were some of the military innovations the Macedonians did

or did Alexander really single handily change the tide of battle to his side in every encounter with the Persians

or just pure luck?

There have been similar questions a couple of times in the faq, here by u/stylepoints99 and here by u/XenophonTheAthenian , which might help.

e: Now I wonder when armour was introduced to the Macedonian phalanx. I thought Philip was too poor to initially give them any?
