I remember hearing that he might have even tried to produce a line abolishing slavery that had to be cut. I can't find anything confirming it however.
According to this response to a similar question by u/cjt09 , he states that Jefferson believed in a gradual abolition of slavery and explains much more his perspective on the issue.
