I'm looking for a pre-war German man who piloted a Horch or Auto Union car through Africa and wrote a terribly offensive and inaccurate book about his experience. Anyone in history fit that profile? I read about him somewhere but now I can't find him.

I wish I could get more specific, but if I could I probably would've found him myself. I have a lot of maybes that may help someone find him or remember him: -May have been a Nazi -May have driven a Horch car through Africa (This one is the one I know is the most important piece of the puzzle) -May have written a misguided book about Africa and Africans in general

Anyone have any names for a guy like this? It's not Rommel and its not Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. Im very frustrated here.

You probably mean Paul Graetz (25.07.1875 - 16.02.1968). A German officer who was the first to cross Africa by car. But it was neither a Horch nor an Auto Union. Instead he drove a car from the Süddeutsche Automobil-Fabrik Gaggenau (which was later bought by what is now the Daimler AG) but had it modified to his plans. He started on the 10. August 1907 in Dar es Salaam (then German East Africa now Tanzania) and reached Swakopmund (then German South-West Africa now Namibia) on 1. May 1909 after 630 days and 9.500 kilometres.

Though he wasn't a Nazi but afaik was imprisoned by them for a while because he didn't want to join them. As to his book "Im Auto quer durch Afrika" (Crossing Africa by automobile), it was a work of his time. On the Daimler website you can find a more detailed account of the journey with a picture of the car
