Was it possible for civilians and journalists to travel between the fronts in WW2?

by Weltenstuermer

I just read on (german) wikipedia that Max Schmeling, german boxer and soldier in WW2, was talking to an american newspaper after a injury in a hospital in the german occupied Athens. So i was wondering if it was possible in WW2 for example a american journalist to travel to german occupied territories and go back again ? Was it even possible for civilians?

What date did this interview occur? Because of the United States entry into the war in 1941 there was a solid 1 1/2 years where Americans would have a neutral country in relation to the conflict.
