Why did Lenin choose the alias Lenin?

He changed his name to hide from Russian authorities, since he was a political revolutionary. It is likely that he chose 'Lenin' due to the Lena river, in a similar way that Georgi Plekhanov did, a contemporary marxist thinker who used the pseudonym 'Volgin' after the Volga river.

Edit: spelling.
