Are the pictures of the crowds from Nazi rallies real? Was it possible to edit photographs convincingly back then?

I'm talking about this picture in particular: http://i.imgur.com/3cDHOIu.jpg

It just seems insane. In all modern protests or rallies, I've never seen so many people cramped together. It just seems impossible: wouldn't a lot of these people suffocate and/or be trampled on each time the crowd moves a bit? Wouldn't people pee on themselves because they would have to cross a very large distance to reach a toilet, which seems impossible given the insane crowd? Wouldn't some people collapse from thirst or exhaustion? How many people are there even? It just seems completely crazy.

If it's real, I'm really curious as to why we don't really see crowds like this anymore.
