In Ken Burns' The Civil War, a soldier is quoted saying they "fought off malaria with whiskey and tobacco." Were malarial fevers a problem in the low country? Also, to what effect were the whiskey and tobacco used?

Can't comment about the local environment being prone to malaria (corrupted/poisonous air in the understanding of the day) however alcohol has always been a prominent part of Western medicine and tobacco was imagined to give strength to the lungs or somehow lessen the impact of the poisonous atmosphere. Smoking was promoted heavily during epidemics of many diseases for this reason.
