Operation Paper Clip comes to mind as one of the more well known attempts by a nation to recruit German scientists due to their advanced knowledge of rocketry. It is widely recognized that many German officers were highly skilled or at least proficient in leading their men and it would strike me that they would have made valuable assets for many nations looking to improve their militaries. Was there ever an "Operation Paper Clip" for former German officers? Thank you for any responses!
Reading The Coldest War by David Halberstam right now about US involvement in the Korean War and he dedicates a lot of space to the effect the massive personnel and budgetary cuts made to the military after WW2. To quote:
"At the end of the war, the US had 12 million in uniform ... fifteen thousand military personnel a day were processed out of the services."
Having just come out of WW2 there was no shortage of skilled, proven and experienced officers in the US Army. While the book doesn't mention anything about German officers it's hard to imagine taking in any in a time like this.
