per capita what? Per artilleryman? Per frontline infantryman? Per European population?
Sort of a follow-up: I read somewhere that for every soldier killed in WWI, something like 100 artillery shells were fired. What sort of statistics are available on the number of shells fired by each nation, the number of soldiers killed by each method (artillery, machine-gun fire, gas etc.), and things like that?
