I know that Pre-Columbian America (more broad than we usually like but also the flair) wasn't devoid of notable technologies but was "scientist" an occupation in any Native American societies? If not, why? If so, how did Native American scientists compare to the great "Western" or Islamic polymaths?
I can't speak for precolumbian America, but "scientist" was not really an occupation in Europe before they learned about the new world, nor for some time afterward.
