What became of the Huns?

by mako-jaeger

So like, the Hunnic Empire was founded in Central Europe and took a wide area reaching from Ukraine to Italy. It lasted about 100 years before dissolving. So we have almost a century of a Central Asian tribe living in this part of Europe, but I haven't heard much about people with Asian descent living in this area.

So after the Empire dissolved, what became of this ethnic group?

The Huns included, presumably, a central aristocracy, but at large they were a multi-ethnic confederation. Gothic, the Hunnic language, and sometimes Latin were spoken in their camps. But the Huns never had time to establish settled, state-style institutions.

Once Attila died, his sons could not keep things todether. Vassels revolted and defeated the Huns, some of whom went back to the Pontic steppes. The ones who went a little bit East, and the rest, were absorbed over time by Slavs, Magyars, Bulgars, Avars, and such. In short, they left descendants, but no polity and their language vanished; they were absorbed.
