I was talking about the electoral college with someone who claimed that without it we'd still have slavery and wouldn't have women's rights. I haven't been able to find anything that suggests that's the case, but I could be missing something. Thoughts?
I am not exactly sure what the other person thinks the role of the electoral college is. The electoral college's only role is that of voting for president and vice president. The end of slavery came about during the Civil War through Lincoln's military orders, the Emancipation Proclamation and eventually the 13th Amendment. In regards to women's rights if we are talking about the right to vote, the 19th Amendment, the states had to pass the Amendment via their legislatures, once again having nothing to do with the electoral college. The right to vote for women or women's suffrage had been an issue since the inception of the nation. In fact New Jersey's first constitution allowed women to vote, they quickly changed it in 1807 to only allow men to vote. Wyoming as a territory, also allowed women the right to vote in the 1860's. But to sum up in both cases the electoral college had nothing to do with either as it is only employed every four years to vote for President and Vice President.
