Does anyone know any good books about early 20th century China or just about the Warlord era? Or even about specific Warlord groups. I was reading the Wikipedia last night and a lot of stuff happened in China 1912-1950, too much for it to be effectively condensed. Thank you.
I had a "warlord fling" a few years ago where I bought any warlord related book I could find on Amazon. This is my personal warlord library:
Warlord Politics in China 1916-1928, Hsi-sheng Ch'i, 1976
Peking Politics 1918-1923: Factionalism and the Failure of Constitutionalism, Andrew Nathan, 1976
From War to Nationalism: China's turning point, 1924-1925, Arthur Waldron, 1995
The Northern Expedition: China's National Revolution of 1926-1928, Donald A. Jordan, 1976
Region and Nation: THe kwangsi Clique in Chinese Politics, 1925-1937, Diana Lary, 1974
Szechwan and the Chinese Republic: Provincial Militarism and Central Power 1911-1938, Robert A. Kapp, 1973
Provincial Militarism and the Chinese Republic: The Yunnan Army, 1905-25, Donald S. Sutton, 1980
The Presidency of Yuan Shih-'kai, Ernest P. Young, 1977
Chinese Warlord: The Career of Feng Yü-hsiang, James E. Sheridan, 1966
Warlord: Yen Hsi-shan in Shanshi Province 1911-1949, Donald G. Gillin, 1967
Chang Tso-lin in Northeast China 1911-1928, Gavan McCormack, 1977
You'll notice none of them are exactly new though. If I were to pick a single one from the list, I'd go with From War to Nationalism
