Were residential schools for indigenous children a uniquely Canadian institution, or were similar institutions established in other colonial countries (e.g. the USA or Australia)?

The USA had Indian Boarding Schools that were used to Americanize Indian students from reservations near and far. In essence, they played the same role as Canadian Residential Schools.

An interesting fact is that they occasionally sterilized (unknowing) students.
