Which examples do you have in mind? Certainly post-1947, the trend has been the opposite, with multiple princely states that would have preferred to retain their independence being annexed (Hyderabad, Junagadh, Sikkim, threat thereof in Travancore), as well as foreign colonial outposts (e.g. Goa).
