The confederacy's recruitment strategy

by geth117

Back in the U.S. Civil War how did the confederates recruit people from all over Southern Society how did they convince the poorer classes into joining the war was it State pride, fear of economic collapse, racism?

All of the above, really. State and regional pride motivated many enlistees. So did the chance to defend the "natural and proper" racial hierarchy of the South and the American dream as many Southerners understood it: a self-sufficient plantation worked by slaves.

Coercion played a huge role, as well. In 1862, the Confederate government passed the Conscription Act, which extended the enlistment of every soldier under arms through to the end of the war and authorized the government to draft any between 16 and 55. There was significant resistance to conscription in many parts of the South, and the Confederacy had to spend more and more of their strength pacifying their own territory as the war dragged on.
