In the early-mid 20th century, belts and suspenders seemed to be running neck and neck for most popular means to keep men's pants up. Today, belts have all but won. How did belts catch suspenders with their pants down?

In old photos and videos, especially from the 1920s through the 1960s, suspenders (or braces, if you're talking about the kind that button onto pants) seem to have been far more common than they are today, especially with suits (which themselves were more common). Why did they fall out of fashion so sharply as the 20th century wore on?
