Why did the Sassanid Persians frequently use maces while maces were just about unheard of in contemporary Roman armies?

For things you use maces for, presumably. Crushing spangenhelms, armor.

I can't speak for contemporary Roman armies, but later Roman armies did use maces, which could have been something borrowed from Sassanians or the later Turks—the exchange of knowledge is pretty common, especially in the military.
