Can anyone elaborate on the Dred Scott Case? I'm confused as to what everyone's philosophy was to be certain.
Here's a good discussion over the question as to whether it's today considered legally ( not morally ) a bad decision. As u/amaurytelemahco points out, it is now understandable only if you assume that Taney felt he had to "settle" the question of slavery, which was tearing apart the country; and settle it in favor of slaveholders.
