I have an interest in internet and computer history, less about the hardware and more on the side of how communities like BBS, forums and Usenet operate. Can you guys provide any good starting points on where to go regarding this?
PLATO has some good history work out there and should interest you - a guy by the name of Brian Dear keeps a PLATO history blog and he has a book coming out in the fall which should be, as they say, "the" seminal work on pre-World Wide Web online community history. PLATO is like this secret defunct academic social network that people only know about if they used it, if you're ever in a group with a fair amount of people who went to college in the 70s (happens to me somewhat frequently) ask if anyone remembers PLATO and you'll get the stories start to roll in, especially if they played any of the games! The PLATO community is still marginally active too, an emulation of the original has 26 people logged in as I type. :) Internet History has its own subject heading but it's a bit messy trying to limit it to what you want in particular. This book looks good.
