Hi there, not sure if this is the right subreddit but since there are a lot of historians on the this subreddit i thought one might be able to point me to some resources.
I am Dutch and my grandfather was aswell. He was not Jewish and got send to Germany to work in a factory.
That is the only information I have. What resources could I use to identify in what camp my grandfather was and how he returned to the Netherlands?
Apologies for any grammar mistakes my native language is not English.
Have you tried the Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database?
While I think the Holocaust Survivors Database is not going to help you much since your grandfather wasn't Jewish, the International Tracing Service will mos likely. They are an organization originally set up by the Red Cross with the specific purpose of finding relatives who were forced laborers or otherwise displaced by war.
You need to contact them and if they can't find the information for you (I don't know how they handle relatives in cases where the victim came back) and they either will do it for you or they will refer you to where you can get access closest to you. I know that both the Wiener Library as well as the Luxembourg National Archives have a complete digital copy of their archives but I'd wager there is an institution in the Netherlands too, most likely NIOD or the Anne Frank House, though I suspect the former. If you are in the US, it is the USHMM that has access to their databse and can be contacted in these cases as well.
Good luck on finding more info!
