I am wondering if in earlier time periods they had something similar to what we have now-a-days in pump up songs (Seven Nation Army/Till I Collapse/ACDC)? Obviously not of the same genre or exact effect but something that got people really amped. I appreciate any responses.
Brass band music (starting in the early 19th c. or so) is pretty much what you're asking for. It also had a notable forerunner in the so-called "Turkish" music of the late 18th c. More generally though, popular dances and marches have always had a bit of a "pump up" quality, even as early as the Renaissance. Similarly for "work songs", shanty's etc. which were also practically useful for coordinating physical labor.
