I was reading one of King's books after watching a documentary on the civil rights movement and a lot of the white people state that kings non-violent yet confrontational tactics that were the primary cause of the violence erupting in their cities. I don't understand what they means by that since they were the ones creating the violence. Were some of King's protests non-violent, but step over boundaries?
Thanks
The whole point of what King was doing was to get white people to react violently so that it would get media coverage and therefore garner sympathy for the Civil Rights Movement. There are plenty of videos out there (I assume some on the very documentary you watched) that show men and women engaging in "civil disobedience", breaking segregation laws, in order to get white people to react with hostility. It worked very well across the south and was one of the most successful forms of protest used.
So what you heard from that documentary, the people blaming King's tactics, is simply victim blaming. They are saying this because he threatened their "way of life".
