Yes. Teddy Roosevelt was shot while giving an election speech in 1912. He had already served two terms (ending in 1908), then was succeeded by William H Taft, his friend and chosen successor. However, TR and Taft had serious falling out over the direction of the Republican Party, leading to TRs return to challenge him in the party primary, then in the general election as the head of the newly formed progressive party. While campaigning, TR was shot while giving a speech by John Flammang Schrank. Schrank was mentally unwell, and later claimed that he had had a dream in which the William McKinley (who had been assassinated) urged him to avenge his death by shooting TR.
