Apologies, but Automod seems to be out sick today.
Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.
As promised, here's a longer entry about my experiences revising the second draft of my dissertation, along with books I bought and fun stuff I've been doing over the past week:
I have to admit that politics commanded more of my attention over the past couple of weeks than it maybe should have, but I also ran into some plain old problems, like struggling to find the perfect phrasing for some tough paragraphs. Since this was a second draft rather than a first, I felt obligated to have the writing be a little more polished, rather than going entirely with the "good dissertation = finished dissertation" philosophy. With these lessons learned, hopefully my third draft will be easier ;p
At the risk of stoking fears again that AH is a hive of Marxist scum and villainy, I am kind of interested in seeing The Young Karl Marx based on the trailer. Of course, the likelihood of it getting a stateside theatrical release (outside of a film festival screening in Miami) is probably quite low, as evidenced by what happened to Creation in 2009. I find it hard to think a US distributor would want to face the ire of the conservative internet for a costume arthouse bromance between Engels and Marx. Meanwhile my FB feed for Fathom Events tells me that Is Genesis Real? is playing in my local cinema this week (my locality gets that, but I had to drive into another state to see Fathom's Labyrinth and Mononoke Hime!).
Does anyone know if the story "The Professor of Signs" was once well known? I've been working on a translation of the former Nova Scotia Gaelic newspaper, Mac Talla, specifically a telling of this. I accidentally discovered an older version from 1825 in an English book (trying to figure out what a "Professor of Signs" would be), and it just sort of seems like the sort of tall tale / joke story that would be commonly passed around. There's some interesting changes and adaptations between the two versions, and I'm curious if anyone has encountered others, or knows about this story.
Edit for really dumb spelling error in which I forget half a word.
I've had a hard time recently studying the US constitution on my own, and am not sure what communities or subs to look to for help. I'm mostly wondering if other users might have knowledge of more palatable break downs, since the original text is a bit less...interesting of a read
