Why weren't French involved in the first wave at Normandy beach, on D-day?
There were Free French forces involved in the D-Day landings, but because the invasion was an invasion of German-occupied France, most of the French military was not able to participate. (The Germans had kept about 2 million French POWs and used them as forced laborers in Germany after the French surrender, and had subsequently disbanded the Vichy military after 1942.)
The Free French forces involved in the landing included:
a small number of paratroopers who dropped with the British SAS into points in Brittany
a commando group of 177 men led by Philippe Kieffer that landed on Sword Beach
three fighter squadrons and two bomber squadrons
four ships: the cruisers Montcalm and Georges Leygues, and destroyers Roselys and La Combattante.
There were also a number of Free French sailors who had volunteered to serve aboard British warships who were part of the invasion fleet.
Free French troops were also part of the follow-on forces that were landed after the beaches were initially secured and harbor facilities created, as well as participating in the invasion of southern France (Operation Dragoon).
EDIT: Also, I noticed that you posted a very similar question here -- do you mind if we remove that one so that answers can be in one thread?
Thanks for the reply
