Both of these areas had developed writing, but I never saw a contemporary source from these regions on the Mongol invasion. Are there any to look at?
The vast majority of our information on the Mongols comes from Persian and Chinese accounts. The absolute vast majority. Without the persian chronically in particular we would have almost no idea what the mongols did beyond china and very little detail on them. Without the Chinese accounts we would miss out on a great deal of history as well as the Secret History of the Mongols, the only surviving Mongol history by the Mongols about the rise of chinggis (genghis) khan, which survived as a chinese translation. (without the secret history we would have no idea about the early life of Chinggis khan. Really the question becomes what contemporary documents on the mongols were you looking at if you were not looking at chinese or persian documents? Anyway, here are some of the persian chronicles that I can remember off the top of my head, unfortunately I can't remember any of the chinese ones at the moment:
Jami' al-tawarikh by Rashid-al-Din Hamadani
Genghis Khan: The History of the World-Conqueror (english title) by Ata-Malik Juvaini
I got these books by reading the Mongols by David morgan
