Does anyone know where about these photo's were taken and perhaps any information of Allied/ Soviet occupation in the region? Judging by other photographs that have mountains ,I'm guessing somewhere in Baden -Wurrtemberg perhaps? Unfortunately Grandpa passed during my angrier teen years, but I really wish I could have a beer with him now and ask him about this journey at the end of the 2nd World War.
Edit. I apologize the picture quality isn't that great, the photos have a gloss glued over them and I couldn't remove them.
First and last are with no doubt berlin
the Reichstag
the entrance of the Reichskanzlei with russian guard
The third photograph is also from Berlin, as it shows the Kaiser Wilhelm National-Denkmal. The monument was typical of the Hohenzollern's neoclassical nationalist kitsch and was demolished by the GDR with only the statue's bronze lions surviving. The monument itself was along with the Reichstag and Reichskanzlei one of the tourist sites for Allied occupation troops, this color footage from 1945 shows the degree of foot traffic around the monument.
The OMGUS on the smashed jeep's bumper stands for Office of Military Government United States, which was the official acronym of the US military occupation until 1949 when it was replaced by HICOG. OMGUS ranged throughout southern and central Germany and head enclaves in Bremen and Berlin- as seen in this map.
As for the castle, this is up in the air. I had initially thought it to be Castle Tyrol in Austria (which was also under military occupation), but the height of this castle's keep tower does not quite match your grandfather's castle. It could be a matter of perspective. If you could find out what unit he was in, there are resources which can narrow this down.
