How often did white people assist with the civil rights movement?

by beefstewforyou

I was thinking about this when I was watching The Butler. The film showed some white people helping. Was this common? How did racists treat them? How did more radical black movements such as Malcolm X or the Black Panthers view them? Were any prominent civil rights leaders white people that wanted to help?

Many white people were active supporters of the civil rights movement, particularly the non-violent movement led by Dr. King. Whites often marched with African Americans. The two main groups of whites that supported the movement were young people and religious leaders. Many whites volunteered to work in the south working to register African American voters. In 1964 two whites were killed with their African-American colleague while working the registration drive in Mississippi by law enforcement. Southern whites viewed whites who supported the movement as race traitors. I am less knowledgeable about reactions toward the more radical movements led by Malcolm X or Stokey Carmichael.
