In "Dark Strangers in Our Midst: Discourses of Race and Nation in Britain, 1947-1963," Waters describes how domesticity was stressed in England during the 50's. Waters also argues that it is during this time that the British identity became more feminine which just made it easier to vilify, or otherize the black people living in England. Perhaps comparisons can be made to America after all. Both places were subverting black people during this time period. But I would say that the American identity was very different than the British "domestic" identity after WW2.
