Bibliography of Dark Ages

Hi everybody,

What is the reference work about the Dark Ages/Early Middle Ages/Late Antiquity in Europe (from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 6th century to the beginning of the Middle Ages in the 10th century) ?

I ask this question because the historians' vision on this period has changed for some decades and I'm facing trouble picking one book among the others in the Wikipedia reading list of the article.

I would start with Peter Brown, The Rise of Western Christendom (for readability) or Chris Wickham, The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages (for comprehensiveness).
