I've been researching information on my great grandfather, who signed up to the Australian army in 1918. He was shipped to Egypt in july and assigned to a "Egyptian general service draft", i cannot find out any information about this. Once the the war concluded he was assigned to the 4th light horse regiment and was presumably involved in putting down the Egyptian revolt. However there are good five months or so when he was in egypt doing... something?
"Egyptian general service draft"
I'd love to look into this further as it's a period in Egyptian history I have some familiarity with and might be able to help, but having done a quick search on that term I haven't found any references to it (as I imagine was your problem as well). Did it appear in documents in that exact phrasing?
Do you know precisely when he was assigned to the 4th Light Horse? Or when he was discharged from service/returned to Australia?
This kind of military documentary research is not a strong suit of mine but there are other people on the sub who are very, very good at it document scans/dates/additional information you might be able to provide would be helpful (or even your great grandfather's name if you're willing to share).
Also if you haven't yet done so, have you had a look at our resources section on Australian military records? It might be of help.
I'm at work at the moment but my own next port of call for looking into this will be to see if I can find any official regimental histories of the 4th Light Horse or other relevant official histories that might touch on what the 4th light horse was doing from October 1918 until end of service.
