Hello historians - I came across the hypothesis that mechanisms such as religion and social shaming were developed to control unrestrained sex, ultimately to prevent a huge population boom when mortality rates were falling (i.e. conceiving more children than one could support). Is this an accurate answer as to why sexuality became a taboo?
The closest thing I could find in this subreddit is u/vertexoflife's answer which details when and how sexuality was repressed by Christianity, but not why.
Thank you.
This is really more of an anthropology question especially because it's so general. If you don't get an answer here, you might try submitting this question to /r/AskAnthropology.
