I can't speak for all native tribes across NA but i can tell a story. The Nuxalk (Bella Colla) were having a bad year, hundreds of their people if not thousands were killed in a flood during the fishing season. They went to Knight Inlet a fishing river to fish. Another tribe there decided to kill all the men that were there and then they did. The survivors of the Nuxalk fishermen went back to their village and told the people what had happened. they gathered up a war party. They went to the village of the people that attacked them and killed a lot of people, they took the regalia of the people that they killed and went home. When the relatives of the same tribe heard that there family had been killed by the Nuxalk they too gathered up a war party. a couple of the neighboring tribes had relatives in the village when the nuxalk attacked and they too wanted to join in. So off they went, they tried to attack the main village site of the nuxalk but failed. They retreated and regrouped. On their way to regroup they ran in to the Heiltsuk(another tribe), the war party killed the heiltsuk and took their regalia. The war party then went home. I cut out a few parts just for simplicity. source Kwakiutl ethnography
