The Sacred Band was armed just like any other unit of hoplites. Their main weapon was the doru, a 6-8ft thrusting spear with a leaf-shaped iron spearhead (left) and a bronze or iron buttspike (right). The buttspike and the tapered shaft combined to create a point of balance about 2/3rds of the way down the length of the spear, so that it could be wielded with the greatest amount of forward reach.
As a sidearm, many hoplites would have carried a short sword. Two types were in widespread use in Classical Greece: the leaf-shaped xiphos and the machaira (also called kopis, "cleaver"), a recurve sabre that was also widely used by horsemen.
