I've bee fascinated for a while by the medieval ballad, and I'd be much obliged if someone could enlighten me on its standing and history across Europe. For Britain, it seems to me that most ballads I come across are Scots. Is this true for, or just a folly on my part? And if it is true, what is the reason behind that?
I can probably tell you more about this, but first could you please let me know: What are your sources for "most ballads" being from Scotland--where are you looking at medieval ballads? When you write about a medieval ballad, are you referring to songs, or poetry without music (or both)?
