Why have Hollywood films romanticised the Vietnam War despite the fact the United States lost?

Could you perhaps clarify what gives you this perspective? While there are films which give a generally positive view of the war in Vietnam, they are few and far between, and for the most part less remembered films. The only recent release that comes immediately to mind would be "We Were Soldiers", while I can think of a nearly unending parade of films that take a negative, dark and/or cynical "War is Hell" view of the war, such as "Platoon", "Apocalypse Now", "Full Metal Jacket", "The Deer Hunter", "Hamburger Hill", "Tigerland", and so on.

So while Vietnam is certainly a popular and recurring theme for Hollywood, "romanticized" isn't generally the word I would describe those films with. If would be useful for any prospective respondent if you could expand slightly on what you mean by that, and perhaps point to the films that you feel exemplify this romanticizing.

In both respects really. The (initially) unexpected loss of the conflict overall and equally the personal experience of loss for troops who had to deal with the deaths of those alongside them.
