Looking for a great WWII memoir

by SiiferRama

I've recently read Fire-eater, Storm of Steel, and Company K and I was looking for a similar war memoir written by a soldier from WWII. The reading list for this sub has plenty of books dealing with WWII but I did not see many memoirs. I read With the Old Breed and loved it, so I was hoping to find something similar.

With the Old Breed was a great book - loved it.

I mainly read about the Eastern front, and the bitter stuggles between the Russians and the Germans.

Here are a few of my favorite German/ Russian memoirs.

German:

Stuka Pilot- Story of Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a stuka ground attack pilot on the eastern front and, highest decorated German soldier.

Blood Red Snow - Story of Gunter Koschorrek, a german Machine gunner on the Eastern front.

Forgotten Soldier - Story of a Guy Sajer’s experiences on the eastern front.

Sniper on the Eastern Front - Story of Sepp Allerberger, a sniper on the eastern front.

Panzer Leader - General Heinz Guderian's memoirs of his experiences fighting in Poland, France and Russia.

Russian:

Red Road from Stalingrad - Story of Mansur Abdulin who fought at Stalingrad.

800 Days on the Eastern Front - Story of Nikolai Litvin who fought at the battle of Kursk.

Flabergie

As Eagles Screamed-Donald R. Burgett: A US paratrooper in the Normandy landings. He also wrote 4 subsequent volumes accounting his service through the rest of the war
The Road Past Mandalay; John Masters: British officer who served in the Middle East and in Burma with the Chindits.
Alamein to Zem Zem; Keith Douglas: British tank officer in the Desert war.
Tank! and Tanks Advance!; Ken Tout: Enlisted tank gunner/commander in Normandy.
A Bloody War; Hal Lawrence: Canadian naval officer in The Battle of the Atlantic
And No Birds Sang; Farley Mowat: Canadian Infantry Officer in Sicily and Italy.
I could go on for hours on this. Bantam War Books reprinted a large number of WW2 memoirs starting in the 1970s and they didn't pick many duds. If you do a web search for Bantam War Books you can find lists of what they published and just about every one them is worth the read. I've got nothing to do with Bantam but they did a great service by making these stories available again and they can frequently be found in used book stores. EDIT: Corrected one of the titles
