The culture of early medieval England is Anglo-Saxon. So why did the Angles give their name to "England" ("Angleland") and why are the people frequently referred to as just "Saxons"?

Why not "Saxonland" or "Angelosaxonland" (aside from being a mouthful) and why don't we refer to the people as the Angles or some other combination?
