I think we need a bit more information. Where are these figures coming from? Which periods are they comparing? The total area of the Achaemenid empire fluctuated and is difficult to estimate. And does the "Macedonian Empire" include Macedon, Thrace and mainland Greece, or does it refer only to that part of Alexander's conquests that coincided with the Achaemenid empire at the start of his campaign?
