It led to a split within the party almost immediately, Trotsky was the apparent heir who was to reinstate democracy and usher in an industrial revolution and global revolution, but the reality is that Trotsky was not very well liked by many, and he was notoriously difficult to work with, so between a lot of candidates they all began putting support to one charismatic fellow who Lenin specifically requested not be put in charge. Joseph Stalin was his name and winning the party election was his game. He accomplished this and(depending on interpretations) after some years of Trotsky and others plotting against him(or vice versa) and his devotion to his own offshoot of Lenin's ideology, he instituted the infamous Purges, which are their own subject. Bit most importantly, some of Lenin's own contributions were wiped away, such as the NEP and plan for democratic work Councils to be instated, which were scrapped for the Five Year Plans and an increased emphasis on the party itself rather than how it was elected.
TL:DR- As us leftists do, the party split immediately, and Leninism was scrapped for Marxism-Leninism
