I am having trouble finding a good distinguishing characteristic between Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca, and Tonatiuh. Both Huitzilopochtli and Tonatiuh are considered the Sun god. Tezcatlipoca is considered the night god, or god of the night sky. But some texts say that the Toxcatl festival was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, and others say it was to dedicated to Tezcatlipoca. And if Templo Mayor was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and the rain god Tlaloc, how important was Tezcatlipoca to the Aztecs? Maybe someone can clear this up for me! As I am finding the Aztec gods very confusing. Thanks.
Huitzilopochtli was not a sun god. A lot of unreliable sources claim that he was, but he was not. The only sun god was Tonatiuh, whose name is literally the word for sun. Tezcatlipoca isn't the "night god", either.
Toxcatl was primarily dedicated to Tezcatlipoca, but there was a lot of regional variation in religious practices. Tezcatlipoca was a widely worshipped god but Huitzilopochtli was specifically a Mexica god, and the Toxcatl rituals associated with Huitzilopochtli were only practiced in Tenochtitlan (and maybe Tlatelolco as well).
Paging /u/ucumu and /u/Mictlantecuhtli -- if you have any insight on the question?
