I said medieval era, but I'd be happy to hear answers about how it was paid for and what the expense was anywhere, any time, pre-Enlightenment.
I searched for an answer but I didn't see anything on it in this sub and not much turned up in my Google search either.
Was healthcare affordable? Was it widespread? Did people save up just in case? Couldn't find much on this topic and I'd appreciate a knowledgeable answer or two.
Thanks!
I could be wrong, but as far as I understand, the first move towards universal healthcare was in Germany with the Sickness Insurance Law in the early 1800s. However, the first instance of secular government aid for healthcare came in the 1500s with the British crown supporting two hospitals as a direct result of petitions from the citizens of London. Before then, most aid for hospitals and healthcare came from the Church, which made sense as most hospitals were attached to or inside monasteries. Some made money for healthcare through donations to the church, and others by setting up inns in parts of the monastery and charging travelers money that was then used for the healthcare of locals. Idk if that answers your question.
