Why didn't the pilgrims that settled America choose a warmer climate to found their first cities in?

I understand that they had never been to the new land before, but they had to have known it got warmer the further south they traveled. Why did they end up settling so far north?

The pilgrims intended to sail for Virginia, which had already been colonized, but sailed several hundred miles off course in a large storm. They were running out of food and out of beer and the captain of the Mayflower decided that they should disembark in Plymouth so that they didn't die at sea.
