Can you recommend the best history of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican2)? I am looking not just for a collection of documents, but also for a narrative history of the sessions, institutions and key personalities. Thank you!

I can get ready access to the documents of the council but I have no idea which volume offers a good background on the characters and key actors and also an accurate narrative of the sessions, meetings, services etc. Can you help?

Oh what fun! I'm relevant again. Well, here are the sources I used that I really enjoyed. I do recommend getting the documents from the Vatican website, as they are the custodians of it and you can always rely on their proper translations.

Vincent Yzermans' "American Participation in the Second Vatican Council". New York City: Sheed and Ward, 1967. This was a wonderful book; it was a primary source collection of American bishops while evaluating each document. I loved it.

There are good chapters about the results of American Catholics at and after VII in Jay Dolan's "In Search of an American Catholicism: A History of Religion and Culture in Tension." Melissa Wilde's "Vatican II: A Sociological Analysis of Religious Change" was enlightening concerning liturgical results.

But if you want a "How the Council did and change it all" book, go to "From Trent to Vatican II: Historical and Theological Investigations." Ed. by Raymond Bulman, and Frederick Parrella. New York: Oxford University Press, 2006. So many good articles.

My pet cause was religious liberty, so I would go to John Courtney Murray. Look at what he wrote because he basically wrote Dignitatis Humanae.
