I'm working on a short story involving identity theft, and I'm wondering what kind of documents could be stolen off a travelling noble and if it could be used to impersonate them.
While it's not exactly a document like a passport, often traveling musicians would carry letters of introduction. That is, letters written by a nobleman who had hired, patronized, or otherwise admired the musician, addressed to another nobleman that they knew in the cities they were traveling to serve as an introduction, and, essentially, letter of reference.
