My English students are writing research papers on the blues as cultural expression, and one of them asked me this question. It seems like something as culturally rich and vibrant as music (particularly its deep relationship with the black community) would have been a target for hate groups to disrupt, mock, or otherwise suppress. Parker from 10th grade says 'Hi,' and thanks in advance!
Kiiind of? I mean, there were black radio stations and white radio stations, and it wasn't until much later that a black artist could be played on a white station, and black musicians couldn't perform for white audiences in many white venues until into the 50s and 60s, and even then they faced many restrictions, couldn't enter through the front door, use the washrooms, stay in the hotel, etc.. is that kind of what you're looking for, or was it something more like active suppression, rather than just segregation?
