Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

I'm doing a report on Mussolini mainly his rise to power and how he was able to come into power, but I'm having trouble on finding primary sources about him and his rise.

I found The Doctrine of Fascism and How Mussolini Triumphed by Trotsky, but I need some more. Does anyone have some primary sources about Mussolini and his rise?

Do you write reading notecards after or during reading a book or paper ? I've noticed it's very hard to remember the main points several months or years after finishing a book, I feel it's kind of a waste to invest so much time and money and not getting the most out of it. What tricks do pros use ?

Hey, I'm considering studying classics at university next year and I was wondering if anyone here could give me an insight into the course; whether they would recommend it, any tips they have etc.

Based on the ground-breaking "The Many Careers of History PhDs," the AHA has gathered data from more than 30 departments that grant history PhDs. Using this information, we have created the only interactive, discipline-specific, and cross-institutional database of career outcomes for PhDs. The data from each program represents a snapshot of the employment of a 10-year cohort (2004–13) of graduates. The AHA plans to continually update that underlying data to expand the number of departments included and to provide data useful to our members.

Finally got around to transcribing a letter I found in the archives last summer whike looking for slavery documents for an education program.

And I hit the jackpot!

The letter is dated 1831 and is in reference to the sale of "Trust Negroes" in Antigua a couple months earlier. There is strong evidence to suggest they were owned by a very prominent businessman and Revolutionist in Massachusetts (which banned slavery in 1783). I have to get back in the archives and find more connections, but I'm stoked! I've already been approved for a conference paper on it, and it solidly supports my working Master's thesis!
