I'm currently extremely interested in the battle of verdun (one of my favorite battlefield 1 maps). While reading about the battle online it is easy to conclude that France made the right decision to defend verdun despite the countless deaths. Due to morale and the fact that war had already started, and there was no way to stop the Germans without fighting other than surrendering. However, I cant help but think that it was a bad idea for France to defend Verdun. Could you helpful historians give me some information, arguments, or recources(books, articles, etc) that would make defending Verduin seam like a big blunder by the french high command.
