Henry Clay did throw his support his support behind John Quincy Adams in the house to ensure his election on the first ballot. We know that the two men had a private meeting before Clay backed Adams, what we don't know is exactly what was said. Historians generally agree that it is doubtful that Clay explicitly asked for the State position and note that Clay strongly disliked Jackson and Adams's policies were more in line with his own anyway. Interestingly Jackson also made overtures to Clay in attempts to win his support, and privately Jackson didn't blame Clay for backing Adams while noting Clay's political stupidity in accepting the position. Ultimately it's less important if Adams actually made the offer and more important that his political opponents seized on it as a rallying cry to attack the Adams administration and would be an issue that resurfaced again and again as Henry Clay sought the Presidency
